It is about rejecting everything that defiles our relationship with God. The laws in Leviticus fall into several categories, including moral laws that reflect God's unchanging character, ceremonial laws fulfilled by Christ, civil laws that governed ancient Israel, and the overarching holiness principle that calls God's people to live differently from the world. The chapter addresses five specific areas where defilement can take root. False worship reminds us that anything taking God's rightful place in our hearts becomes an idol, and every idol demands a sacrifice. Counterfeit spirituality, whether through astrology, tarot, psychics, or occult practices, draws people away from God and into darkness rather than toward the guidance He freely provides. Dishonor within the family weakens the first institution God created and allows rebellion to spread throughout the broader community. Sexual immorality is described as uniquely destructive because it sins against the body itself, which belongs to God as His temple. Cultural compromise is perhaps the most subtle threat of all, seeping in gradually until believers can no longer distinguish between God's standards and the world's.

The foundation of everything in Leviticus 20 is found in a single defining truth: God does not say to be holy so that we might one day belong to Him. He says we already belong to Him, and therefore we are to be holy. Holiness is not the path to salvation. It is the fruit of it. We do not live differently because we think we are better than others. We live differently because we have been purchased by Christ and filled with His Spirit. That identity is the most powerful motivation for rejecting everything that defiles us.
