Holy Because He Is Holy

Verse: Leviticus 19:1–37
Holiness is one of the most misunderstood words in the Christian life. It is not about being weird, self-righteous, or disconnected from the world. It simply means being set apart from the world and set apart for God. Leviticus 19 makes clear that this call to holiness is not rooted in fear of punishment but in love for the God who saved us. God does not love us more on the days we do well and less on the days we fail. His love is constant, and because of Jesus, we are already accepted. We pursue holiness not to earn anything, but because we love the One who loved us first.
Leviticus 19 gets remarkably practical about what holiness looks like in everyday life. It includes honesty in business, fair treatment of workers, care for the poor, respect for the elderly, and compassion for foreigners. It also addresses the condition of the heart, specifically the call to release bitterness, forgive those who have wronged us, and refuse to carry grudges. The command to love your neighbor as yourself, which Jesus called one of the two greatest commandments, sits at the very center of this chapter. Holiness is never just an inward posture. It always shows up in how we treat people.
Israel failed to live up to this standard, and if we are honest, so have we. That is exactly why Jesus came. He fulfilled every command perfectly, carried the penalty for every failure at the cross, and secured victory for every believer through the resurrection. The law could only reveal sin. Only Jesus could remove it. Today, the God of Leviticus is still the God of the Gospel, and He is still calling His people to reflect His character. Not through self-effort or legalism, but through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit living within us.
