We Know: Living With Confidence In Christ

September 29, 2025 Speaker: Dr. Abimbola Afolabi Series: Prove It

Verse: 1 John 5:18–21

First John 5:18-21 offers three essential truths that provide believers with unwavering confidence in their Christian journey. Throughout this epistle, John repeatedly uses the phrase 'we know' to emphasize the certainties that ground our faith, even when facing spiritual challenges. The first truth is that believers are set apart from sin. While Christians still sin, those born of God do not practice habitual, unrepentant sin because they have received a new nature that loves holiness. Jesus himself protects believers so that the evil one cannot cling to them. The second truth is that believers are set apart from the world.

While the world lies in the power of the evil one, Christians belong to God's family with their citizenship in heaven. This position allows believers to walk with holy boldness, not out of arrogance but from the quiet confidence of knowing their heavenly Father. The third truth is that believers are set apart from falsehood. Jesus came to give understanding so believers can know God personally, not just intellectually.John concludes with a warning against idols - anything that takes God's place in our hearts. These aren't just carved images but can be subtle things like relationships, career, or even blessings from God that become our focus instead of the Giver. The Christian life isn't merely about knowing these truths but living them until they become second nature, responding to God immediately and completely.
