Prayer Is Not a Wishlist

Topic: Prayer Verse: 1 John 5:14–17
Prayer often becomes our spiritual shopping list rather than a means of seeking God's will. There are two approaches to prayer: horizontal prayer that focuses selfishly on our comfort, and vertical prayer that aligns with God's purposes. While we naturally want financial prosperity, career success, and material possessions, what we truly need is peace, joy, self-control, and holiness. To pray with confidence, we must first sync our prayers with God's Word. When we abide in Scripture, our desires naturally align with His will—for our sanctification, the salvation of others, wisdom in daily decisions, and Christ's return.
This means reframing our prayers: instead of asking God to make our children excel in everything, we pray for their spiritual growth; rather than asking God to remove difficult people, we pray for patience to live at peace with them. Second, we must submit to God's outcomes, trusting that whether He answers with yes, no, or wait, He knows what's best. Finally, we should stand in the gap for others who stumble in sin, making intercession our first response rather than judgment or gossip. By practicing these habits, our prayers become less about bending God to our will and more about being transformed into His image.
