Real Love - No Strings Attached

June 29, 2025 Speaker: Caldon Charles Series: Prove It

Verse: 1 John 4:7–12

Our culture has distorted the meaning of love, often confusing it with lust, emotions, or conditional acceptance. Six counterfeit versions particularly plague us: equating love with approval, never saying no, mere feelings, tolerance of everything, conditional benefits, and self-care above all else. These counterfeits have infiltrated the church, causing us to avoid hard conversations, enable unhealthy behaviors, abandon difficult relationships, and withhold grace based on superficial conditions. In contrast, 1 John 4:7-12 reveals four movements of authentic love.

First, real love originates from God—we can only genuinely love others when we've received love from Him. Second, real love resembles Jesus, who sacrificially pursued us while we were still His enemies. Third, real love does what's needed, even when inconvenient or costly. Finally, real love makes the invisible God visible—when we love sacrificially, people see God through us. The gospel doesn't call us to love more to earn God's acceptance; rather, it reminds us that because we're already fully loved, we can freely extend that same love to others, especially to those who are difficult to love.
