Verse: 1 John 3:4–10
Sin is defined as anything that contradicts God's will, character, or law - not by worldly standards but by God's Word alone. The Bible teaches that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory. Sin can be understood through the acronym S.I.N.: Selfishness (placing ourselves above God and others), Independence from God (pushing God aside thinking we know better), and Narcissism (being self-absorbed and focused on self-gratification).Sin is extremely serious because it seduces us like forbidden fruit, spreads to all areas of life, separates us from fellowship with God, enslaves our mind and body, and ultimately sentences us to physical, spiritual, and eternal death.
God's solution to this problem is Jesus Christ, who saves believers from sin's power through sanctification, from sin's penalty through justification, and will eventually save them from sin's very presence through glorification. Living righteously involves abiding in Christ through spiritual disciplines, guarding our hearts against sinful influences, having zero tolerance for sin, avoiding triggers and temptations, establishing accountability relationships, and practicing daily repentance.
