The Measure Of Obediene
April 13, 2025 Speaker: Dr. Abimbola Afolabi Series: Prove It
Verse: 1 John 2:7–11
The essence of Christian living is measured not by religious activities but by our capacity to love others as Christ loved us. This transformative love, while an ancient command, took on new meaning through Jesus's sacrifice and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. It's impossible to claim a relationship with God while harboring hatred or bitterness toward others - our love for the visible brother reflects our love for the invisible God.
True Christian love manifests in practical ways: forgiving before it's deserved, serving without expecting returns, speaking truth with gentleness, and showing up for people regardless of natural affinity. Hatred, on the other hand, acts as spiritual blindness, distorting reality and leading people further into darkness. It can manifest subtly through silent grudges or passive aggression, ultimately damaging our spiritual walk if left unchecked.
The challenge lies in examining our hearts for areas where bitterness might be hiding and taking concrete steps toward loving others sacrificially and unconditionally. This includes loving those with different views or beliefs, refusing to participate in gossip, and intentionally showing Christ-like love to difficult people. The evidence of walking in the light is clear - it's found in how we actively love others.
